Chef2video being a 100% user generated content site, we tend to come across thousands of food video producers, bloggers and writers. As such, we thought it would be fun to share our “Top 10s” in different categories, hoping you will comment back with your own favorites.

The first category is… “Thoughtful Food Blogs”. We consider these bloggers to be thought leaders in their category, people who raise awareness and guide change in how we grow and consume our food or intelligently run food businesses. Purposely excluded from this list are pure recipe sites and food celebrities, which will form categories of their own.

Chef2video’s Top 10 “Thoughtful Food Blogs”

1. SUMMER TOMATO – Darya Pino’s wonderfully articulate ability to combine science, foodism, health and local food thought leadership makes this our number one pick. Engages amazingly well with her readers and Twitter followers. In addition to her regular coverage of health, food and eating topics, Darya has also launched a number of thematic series: must reads include “How to Eat in Restaurants”, “For the Love of Food” and a video blog on her weekly Farmer’s Market escapades (only criticism: she hasn’t yet posted them on Chef2video). Oh, and yes, she’s a babe…

2. EVERY KITCHEN TABLE – Rob Smart’s sustainable food blog does a fantastic job of educating people on the issues surrounding the food industry (health, environment and business), with the ultimate mission of bringing sustainable food experiences to “every kitchen table”. His newly coined “Pro Food” term is a thoughtful evolution of the Slow Food movement, with an entrepreneurial viewpoint.

3. FARM TO TABLE – Zachary Cohen complements his “Farm to Table” TV show with this excellent blog where he skillfully goes after the mainstream’s culinary culture of fast, thoughtless food. His poignant writing, humor and coverage of major news in the food space makes “Farm to Table” a great informational resource and educational read.

4. SUMMER SPOON – Written by Kari, a professional dancer with a passion for food and cooking. A passion that has driven her to take on a challenging summer internship working for “The Chef” in “The Restaurant”, which she tells us all about in her humorously detailed blog-diary. A great behind the scenes insight on culinary skills, restaurant management and kitchen experiences.

5. THE STEW – From The Tampa Tribune’s food columnist Jeff Houck, The Stew is a witty blog that has turned professional food writing upside down. Jeff covers the topics you would expect a major publication to cover: food trends, restaurant reviews, food and wine shows – but with a constantly hilarious twist. We may have found our first “Food Comedian”…but won’t call this a category until we come across another nine.

6. TINY FARM BLOG – With “sustainable food” becoming a dominant theme in the food industry and a requirement for a healthy and cost-conscious life – this blog is a fantastic demonstration on how simple “sustainable” actually is. The tag-line says it all: Organic micro-farming with two acres and some tools – a daily photo journal.

7. CIVIL EATS – Paula Crossfield and team do a fantastic job of promoting thinking in sustainable agriculture and food systems. With over 40 contributors it’s a wonderfully diverse blog, but consistently focused on creating discussion around food politics.

8. R.I.A. UNPLUGGED – We’re probably breaking our own rules by including Helen Malloy’s blog as she is a PR celeb in the restaurant industry. The insight she provides on food trends, restaurant management, innovation and PR probably deserves your forgiveness…

9. URBAN FARMER – A wonderful diary-blog from London Times columnist and city farmer Celia Brooks Brown. Covering the lifecycle of growing your own veg to what to actually do with them is an invaluable resource to real and sustainable food supporters.

10. THOUGHTS FROM BECCA – Professional Aussie Chef Rebecca Varidel’s entertaining and informative blog covering food travel, slow and regional food advocacy and tasty recipes. We’re also impressed by her sustained Twitter stamina!
